These handcrafted Chinese display trays combine newly made solid elm wood bodies with reclaimed carved wooden panels salvaged from older Chinese furniture and architectural pieces.
Each tray incorporates original carved decoration into its sides, preserving the colour, patina and traces of age of the old panels while giving them a new functional life. The warm, understated grain of the newly crafted elm wood provides a quiet contrast to the richly coloured and time-worn carvings.
The two trays are individually made and feature different reclaimed panels. One incorporates deeper red carved motifs with a more restrained palette, while the other features scrolling floral decoration in red, green and muted gilt tones. As the carved elements are original old pieces, variations, wear and losses are part of their history and make each tray unique.
Designed and handcrafted in China, the trays bring together traditional Chinese decorative carving and contemporary furniture-making. They can be used for displaying tea ware, ceramics, jewellery or collected objects, or simply as decorative pieces on a coffee table, console or sideboard.
