Lampshade
The shade is shaped using box pleats, creating a crisp architectural form with clean vertical folds. This construction gives the lampshade a more tailored silhouette while still allowing the fabric to move gently as light passes through the pleats.
Both the top and lower edges are finished with hand-applied green binding, framing the shade and giving the piece a neat, refined outline. The contrast piping subtly emphasises the structure of the pleats while maintaining the softness of the textile.
The back side is finished in warm yellow. When lit, the jacquard weave reveals its delicate texture, allowing the floral motifs to appear gradually in the light.
This lampshade is named after Kyoto, a city we love for its serene temples, refined gardens and timeless sense of calm.
All lampshades are handmade in England.

Fabrics
The silk fabric features a pattern of butterflies and orchid blossoms, two motifs long associated with elegance and natural beauty in East Asian decorative traditions.
Orchids have been celebrated in Chinese art and poetry for centuries as one of the “Four Gentlemen” plants, symbolising integrity, grace and cultivated taste. Their slender stems and floating blossoms often appear in paintings and textiles as expressions of understated elegance.
Butterflies, by contrast, introduce a sense of lightness and movement. In traditional symbolism they are often associated with joy, freedom and the fleeting beauty of nature.
In this textile, butterflies appear gently scattered among the orchid flowers across a soft celadon-green ground, creating a composition that feels both lively and serene.
The silk weave gives the fabric a subtle sheen, while the yellow reverse of the cloth enriches the light when illuminated, allowing the shade to glow with a warm and atmospheric tone.
