Vintage Chinese Lacquered Serving Tray with Openwork Sides
Description
A distinctive vintage Chinese lacquered tray, notable for its pierced openwork sides, richly aged red-and-black surface and traces of historic repair.
The tray is particularly distinguished by the pierced openwork decoration running around all four sides, adding a delicate architectural quality to its otherwise simple rectangular form. The original lacquer shows areas of rubbing, fading and loss, revealing layers of its history and giving the piece a rich, naturally aged patina.
The underside shows evidence of an old repair, including a visible stitched repair along a split in the wooden base. This has been retained as part of the history of the piece rather than concealed. Please refer to the detailed photographs for its condition.
Both decorative and functional, it could be used as a serving tray, a display surface for tea ware or collected objects, or simply as an atmospheric decorative piece in its own right.
Vintage condition with considerable age-related wear to the lacquer, including rubbing, scratches, marks and areas of loss. An old stitched repair is visible to the underside of the tray. These signs of age form part of the character and history of the piece. Please refer to the photographs for details.
Estimated date: 1920s–1940s.
Dimensions: 30cm (D) x 4.5cm(H) x 43.5cm (W)
