This antique Chinese medicine chest was traditionally used in herbal pharmacies to store a wide variety of medicinal ingredients used in traditional Chinese medicine.
The cabinet features 38 small drawers, each originally designated for a specific herb or ingredient. Drawers still retain their original paper labels with handwritten Chinese characters, offering a glimpse into its working life in a traditional apothecary.
Each drawer is fitted with a brass pull in the form of a stylised gourd, a symbol long associated with medicine and healing in Chinese culture. Inside, the drawers are divided into several compartments, allowing different herbs to be stored separately and measured easily by the herbalist.
The cabinet is constructed from solid wood and finished in a weathered black lacquer, which has worn naturally over time to reveal layers of warm wood tones beneath. The softened edges, worn surfaces and small marks are consistent with decades of use and contribute to its authentic aged character.
This cabinet has been carefully restored to stabilise the structure while preserving its original character and patina. The finish retains its authentic wear and texture developed over decades of use.
The weathered black tone is particularly versatile and works beautifully across a range of interiors — from rustic country homes and traditional spaces to more contemporary settings where aged wood adds warmth and depth.
