A distinctive Chinese wooden cabinet combining an antique architectural carving with a newly crafted solid wood body.
The cabinet itself is newly made from Chinese toon wood (椿木), with a dark, warm finish and traditional slatted detailing across the front. At its centre, an antique carved wooden panel has been carefully incorporated into the new structure, preserving the colour, surface wear and character of the original piece.
Unlike a conventional cabinet, the front panel opens outward, revealing a generous storage compartment inside. This makes the piece both decorative and functional — suitable as a low storage cabinet, side cabinet, tea room piece or an atmospheric addition to an entryway or living space.
Two individual designs are available:
Wudao 悟道
The top is carved with the Chinese characters 悟道, meaning “to awaken to / comprehend the Way”. The antique carving incorporated into the front has a more architectural, shrine-like composition, giving this version a quiet and contemplative character.
Yu Qing 有余庆
The second design features 有余庆, an auspicious Chinese expression associated with the idea that accumulated goodness brings lasting blessings to future generations. The antique central panel features a richly carved circular composition with traces of its original red and gilt decoration.
The contrast between the restrained new toon-wood cabinet and the aged carved elements is intentional. Rather than reproducing an antique piece, these cabinets give surviving fragments of old Chinese woodwork a new purpose while allowing their age and imperfections to remain visible.
