A small decorative Chinese folding screen created from antique carved wooden panels, newly framed in solid elmwood.
The four antique panels feature raised floral and botanical carvings against a deep red ground, each retaining its own variations in colour, surface and wear. Rather than restoring the old panels to look new, their aged finish has been preserved, giving the screen a wonderfully warm and timeworn character.
The surrounding elmwood frames are newly made, carefully constructed to give the antique carvings a new life while keeping the overall design simple and understated.
Joined with small hinges, the four panels can be arranged in a gentle zigzag when displayed or folded neatly together when not in use. At just 38 cm high, it is a charming tabletop decorative screen rather than a full-size room divider — ideal for a console table, shelf, mantelpiece or cabinet.
It also works beautifully as a backdrop for ceramics, tea wares or other collected objects.
