Suzhou Hand-Painted Chinese Cabinet
Description
A richly decorated cabinet reflecting the visual language of late Qing to early Republican period painted furniture.
Set against a deep, dark ground, the hand-painted panels feature bird-and-flower motifs, lotus and dragonfly compositions, and traditional geometric borders. The central roundels on the doors are framed in soft patinated tones, while the top retains traces of layered decorative painting, now gently worn by time.
The surface shows natural age-related wear, areas of fading, and lacquer loss consistent with traditional painted furniture. These marks of use are integral to the character of the piece rather than imperfections.
Based on its decorative style and construction, the cabinet is believed to embody late Qing to early Republican period craftsmanship; however, an exact date cannot be formally verified.
Both practical and expressive, it offers functional storage while presenting as a fully resolved visual object — suitable for a hallway, study or living space where depth, history and layered detail are appreciated.
