This striking tiered display stand is crafted from reclaimed Catalpa wood, a hardwood traditionally valued in China for its strength, stability and resistance to moisture. Catalpa was often used in boat building and riverside structures, making it particularly durable when exposed to water.
The timber used in this piece is believed to have spent many years submerged or exposed to water, likely as part of an old boat or waterside construction. Over time, the prolonged exposure compacted the wood fibres, creating the remarkable density and weight the stand carries today. The piece weighs approximately 50 kg, giving it an exceptional sense of solidity.
The vertical support is cut from a thick reclaimed beam, retaining its deep natural patina and irregular edges formed through decades of use and weathering. Subtle carved marks and natural variations remain visible across the surface, preserving the history of the timber.
Three staggered platforms extend from the central post, forming an asymmetrical structure that balances strength with sculptural presence. The layered design allows objects to be displayed at different heights, making the stand ideal for plants, ceramics or decorative objects.
