Vintage Chinese Elm Table, Early 20th Century
Description
This vintage wooden table is believed to be made from old elm, a hardwood traditionally used in northern Chinese furniture. The surface shows the distinctive grain and dense texture often associated with aged elm, with areas of wear that reveal layers of earlier finishes.
The table retains traces of its original dark blue lacquer, now naturally worn through years of use. The softened edges, exposed timber and uneven patina give the piece a character that cannot be reproduced by newly made furniture.
Its structure follows the restrained lines typical of traditional Chinese tables: a rectangular top supported by straight legs with simple corner brackets and stretchers beneath. The proportions are balanced and practical, allowing the table to function equally well as a writing desk, dining table or display table.

Based on the construction methods, materials and natural wear, the table is believed to date from the early 20th century, likely from the late Qing Dynasty or early Republican period.
As with many vintage pieces of this age, small marks, colour variations and signs of use remain visible throughout the surface. These details form part of the table’s history and visual appeal.
